چکیده

The new field of “Computational Ethology” is made possible by advances in technology, mathematics, and engineering that allow scientists to automate the measurement and the analysis of animal behavior. We explore the opportunities and long-term directions of research in this area.

Action selection for Intelligent Systems

Action selection is a way of characterizing the most basic problem of intelligent systems: what to do next. In artificial intelligence and computational cognitive science, the action selection problem is typically associated with intelligent agents and animats – artificial systems that exhibit complex behaviour in an agent environment. The term is also sometimes used in ethology or animal behav...

Old Tricks, New Dogs: Ethology and Interactive Creatures

This thesis seeks to address the problem of building things with behavior and character. By things we mean autonomous animated creatures or intelligent physical devices. By behavior we mean that they display the rich level of behavior found in animals. By character we mean that the viewer should "know" what they are "feeling" and what they are likely to do next. We identify five key problems as...

Labels, cognomes, and cyclic computation: an ethological perspective

For the past two decades, it has widely been assumed by linguists that there is a single computational operation, Merge, which is unique to language, distinguishing it from other cognitive domains. The intention of this paper is to progress the discussion of language evolution in two ways: (i) survey what the ethological record reveals about the uniqueness of the human computational system, and...

Action-Selection in Hamsterdam: Lessons from Ethology

A computational model of action-selection is presented, which by drawing on ideas from Ethology, addresses a number of problems which have been noted in models proposed to date including the need for greater control over the temporal aspects of behavior, the need for a loose hierarchical structure with information sharing, and the need for a flexible means of modeling the influence of internal ...
